A visionary regeneration project

Home to the BBC and ITV, and officially opened by The Queen in 2012, MediaCity is one of the world’s biggest media brands. Located at Salford Quays on Manchester’s historic ship canal, MediaCity is the most significant media development in the UK in decades, transforming Salford’s landscape and skyline.

A new UK creative hub for media-related activities

Following the successful relocation of the BBC, the scheme has also become the new home for ITV in the north, as well as for the University of Salford’s Media Faculty and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. These major organisations are supplemented by more than 200 SMEs providing creative, digital and tech business support across the media hub. There are now more people working at MediaCity than there were working in the historic Manchester docks.

Creating a new community

Sited above the BBC buildings are two residential towers housing 378 high quality residential units in the heart of the development, providing a range of accommodation including studios, one and two bed apartments and three bedroom duplex penthouses. Other facilities include a television studio complex, a 200-key hotel, speculative office buildings, a site-wide tri-generation energy centre, retail and catering facilities and a 2,300-space multi-storey car park. The development is set within a high-quality public realm and landscape incorporating an events' piazza and media park.

Our role

Chapman Taylor was lead architect for phase one of this £500m project, which includes three bespoke office buildings for the BBC, two residential towers, technical fit-out of the TV studios, high quality public realm and a new Metrolink station linking the development with the Manchester tram network.

The world’s first BREEAM sustainable community

Winner of Regeneration Project of the Year at the MIPIM UK Awards 2015, it’s also the first development in the world to acquire BREEAM Sustainable Community status, incorporating world-leading sustainable design innovation across the estate.

Looking to the future

Having successfully delivered the first phase of MediaCity, Chapman Taylor is continuing to work with Peel Media and L&G Capital on the Phase 2 masterplan and building designs, which include a further 1,800 residential units and will see MediaCity continue to develop into a sustainable community for the future.

Award-winning MediaCity is of the world’s biggest media brands.
