Unreal Engine – adding industry-leading visualisation technology to our wide range of design tools

Chapman Taylor uses a wide array of design tools for our projects, choosing the most appropriate for the context and the client’s requirements. In line with this approach, we are increasingly exploring the opportunities for ultra-realistic and immersive design visualisation offered by the industry-leading gaming software Unreal Engine.

Unreal Engine is a gaming development platform, developed by Epic Games, that provides a range of real-time design tools with which architects can create stunning visualisations and animations. The imagery produced using the technology provides viewers with an immersive, interactive experience at an unrivalled level of quality and detail.

Chapman Taylor has been using Unreal Engine as one of a suite of design tools to present design concepts to our clients. Unreal Engine allows us to create bespoke imagery which can better convey the essence of a site and its context. For example, it has allowed us to create images which faithfully replicate the light, heat, visual features and feel of sites we are working on in Saudi Arabia.

Unreal Engine can author high-quality content for use on PCs, laptops and mobiles as well as truly immersive VR and AR experiences. Clients and members of design teams can interact with, and control, the visual models we create, providing them with a more exciting and realistic understanding of the design vision.

Clients come to us for our excellent design work and, through the adoption of real-time technology such as Unreal Engine, we are able enhance the involvement of our clients in the design process.

Tim joined Chapman Taylor in 1994 and became a Director in 2014. Working closely with our international studios as a lead designer, he specialises in the concept design of projects including complex mixed-use developments and masterplans.

He has over 20 years’ experience of designing large-scale mixed-use international projects across a variety of industry sectors and locations.
