Regeneration: Passages Pasteur Mall opens in Besançon, France

The opening ceremony of Passages Pasteur Mall took place on November 26th in Besançon, France.

The project is a historical city centre retail and residential regeneration scheme within the heart of the 16th century City of Besançon. This scheme is partly in a sensitive heritage and listed buildings area.

The mall is in a 1.5 hectare block that includes 16,000 sqm GLA of retail units over three levels, 100 residential apartments on the upper levels and a five storey underground public carpark.

The project has taken fifteen years to realise due to the complexity of the surrounding listed buildings, flood regulations, ground pollution and archaeological remains on the site.

Chapman Taylor has many years’ experience delivering schemes within heritage or historical settings.  The maintenance and renewal of the physical fabric of historic towns involves a broad range of skills from strategic planning and detailed technical advice to the sensitive design of new buildings and the repair, alteration and extension of existing buildings. In all of these cases, Chapman Taylor aim to realise the most beneficial use for a building without compromising its character.

Many thanks to the team who achieved this long-term challenge: Pascal Jeangout, Aouda Kebdani, Ariel Riquelme, Pablo Oviedo, Laura Vasile, Nicolas Guillot, with the initial concept designed by Chris Lanksbury and the Chapman Taylor London team.
