Cour Bareuzai Urban regeneration wins “Special Prize” at the prestigious Prix Versailles European Awards 2020

Chapman Taylor’s urban regeneration design at Cour Bareuzai in Dijon, France, has been awarded “Special Prize - Exterior” in the “Shopping Malls” category for the prestigious Prix Versailles 2020 European awards.

The awards celebrate architecture and design which exemplifies successful synergy between the economy and culture, particularly in the retail and hospitality sectors. The projects must be deemed to encompass innovation and creativity, reflect local, natural and cultural heritage, display ecological efficiency and uphold the values of social interaction and participation which the United Nations holds in high regard.

Cour Bareuzai, along with the other European winners, will go forward for the 2020Prix VersaillesWorld Title ceremony, which will take place online in early December 2020.

Designed by Chapman Taylor, the Cour Bareuzai project involved the beautiful and sensitive renovation of a 17th/18th century mansion house building formerly used as offices for Dijon's local authorities.

The aim of our design was to repurpose the heritage buildings to give them a new lease of life and to help re-energise this area of Dijon city centre.

The context-sensitive scheme creates 2,300m² of attractive and welcoming, high-end retail and restaurant space across three floors for the UNESCO World Heritage-designated city centre, designed to blend harmoniously with their surroundings. A wall which blocked views to the historic buildings was demolished.

This rewarding urban renewal project has created a vibrant street scene from morning to late evening, helping to bring social and economic life to the area in a manner sensitive to its history.

Chapman Taylor has many years’ experience delivering schemes within heritage or historical settings. The maintenance and renewal of the physical fabric of historic towns involves a broad range of skills, from strategic planning and detailed technical advice to the sensitive design of new buildings and the repair, alteration and extension of existing buildings.
