Chapman Taylor reveals interior design vision for St George’s House West, Wimbledon
Chapman Taylor has unveiled its interior design concept for St George’s House West, marking a new chapter in the refurbishment of this prominent office building in Wimbledon town centre. The project, which has recently received planning approval from Merton Council, sees Chapman Taylor applying its expertise in adaptive reuse and sustainable workplace design to transform a tired 1980s commercial asset into a modern, flexible and high-quality workspace.
Rooted in respect, the interior design strategy focuses on sympathetic intervention, sitting hand in hand with the architectural approach. Through the retention of the existing structure and brick, the design celebrates the existing—creating an honest, legible stitch between old and new.
Internal spaceplanning is shaped by the dialogue between the existing structure and the new architectural intervention - informing internal zoning of the space as well as form, whilst maintaining spatial rhythm and daylight quality. Pairing this with considered material selection and landscaped features creates a seamless flow between the street and interior. With a retro-fit first approach, sustainability is integral to the design concept. Reclaiming materials removed in the architectural works for reuse in the interior is not only inherently sustainable but tells a story of the building’s past – and how that is embedded in its future.
The spatial sequence within the ground floor arrival and amenity experience is carefully choreographed, offering a soft hierarchy of formality. The informal teapoint lounge gives way to focused work settings, then to enclosed meeting rooms, before arriving at a semi-enclosed flexible presentation space designed for collaboration and exchange. The balance between openness and enclosure allows occupants to choose how they work, when they collaborate, and where they retreat.

At the heart of the interior design strategy is a focus on daylight, wellbeing and flexibility. The lower ground and first floor interior environments have been reimagined to maximise natural light penetration, creating inviting, productive spaces that support a range of contemporary working styles. Thoughtful material selection and spatial planning will enhance visual connectivity between the street and interior, reinforcing the building’s new identity as a modern BCO Grade A office destination.
Key design features include an emphasis on biophilic elements and high-quality finishes to elevate user experience and wellbeing. Flexible meeting and collaborative areas are arranged to facilitate interaction and adaptable use, while refined amenity spaces encourage occupant comfort and connection. By integrating these elements, Chapman Taylor’s interior design complements the broader architectural vision for the building, supporting both daily workplace needs and long-term adaptability.
Sustainability remains a core principle throughout the design concept, aligning with the project’s overarching retrofit-first approach. High-performance, locally sourced materials and low-energy mechanical systems combine with landscaped interior features to create environments that prioritise occupant health, efficiency and environmental performance.
The interior design for St George’s House West is set to enhance the building’s appeal in Wimbledon’s competitive commercial market, bringing forward a workplace environment that meets the expectations of today’s occupiers while setting a new benchmark for retrofit and reuse projects in London.
