The pattern is a variation of “Kufic” – one of the oldest form of calligraphy originated in Arabic countries (7th century). Initially, the pattern was used on coins and monuments however later, due to its simple and decorative character, it was used in domestic and public buildings.
As Kufic script was prevalent in manuscripts during 8th – 13th century, inscriptions of it started appearing on monumental architecture around Azerbaijan, mostly on mausoleums and mosques.
Azerbaijan, especially Quba, was the most diverse area in the country, having had the influence from Arabic, Ottoman, Russian and Jewish cultures. Thus, during the 14th century, famous Quba’s “Chi-Chi” rugs have been influenced by the scripts and used patterns closely related to Kufic in various ways.
In this design, a variation of Kufic pattern is used on shutters, balustrades and other architectural elements to add a a further cultural and historic layer to this building.
