FENESTRATION PATTERN DETAILS
RESIDENTIAL
INSPIRED BY KUFIC CALLIGRAPHY
The pattern is a variation of Kufic – one of the oldest forms of Arabic calligraphy (7th century). Initially, the Kufic pattern was used on coins and monuments. Later, however, due to its simple and decorative character, it was used in domestic and public buildings.
As Kufic script was prevalent in manuscripts during the 8th – 13th centuries, inscriptions using it started appearing on monumental architecture around Azerbaijan, mostly on mausoleums and mosques.
Azerbaijan, especially Quba, was the most diverse area in the region, influenced by Arabic, Ottoman, Russian and Jewish cultures. During the 14th century, the famous Quba “Chi-Chi” rugs were influenced by scripts and patterns closely related to Kufic in various ways.
In this design, a variation of Kufic pattern is used on shutters, balustrades and other architectural elements to add a further cultural and historic layer to this building.
