Trinity Leeds celebrates five years since opening

The extraordinarily successful Trinity Leeds shopping centre, designed and delivered by Chapman Taylor for Landsec as part of the urban regeneration of Leeds city centre, is celebrating five years of trading.

The multi-award-winning retail and leisure development opened on 21 March 2013, and attracts over 23 million visitors every year. The 76,000m² development houses shops, bars, restaurants and a cinema in an all-day, all-evening venue, with 120 outlets operating in total.

25% of the total commercial space is dedicated to food and leisure, including a 2,500m², four-screen art-house cinema, a rooftop dining terrace and basement cocktail bars. Trinity is pioneering in the way it incorporates such a high proportion of F&B facilities. A groundbreaking element is the creation of Trinity Kitchen, the UK’s first authentic indoor street food venue, offering a wide range of culinary options. Vendors are regularly rotated to keep the offer up-to-date and to provide customers with new experiences.

The pioneering Trinity Kitchen indoor street-food space

The scheme comprises buildings linked by a series of naturally-ventilated, arcaded streets and public spaces, modern yet sympathetic to the Victorian streetscape and adjacent, 18th century Holy Trinity church. Chapman Taylor’s brief was to unite three of Leeds’ busiest thoroughfares around a new central space, including the refurbishment of an existing shopping centre.

The development is rated BREEAM ‘Excellent’ for sustainability. The scheme comprises buildings linked by a series of naturally ventilated, arcaded streets and public spaces. A self-supporting, grid-shell glazed roof rises 30m above street level, providing abundant natural light as well as a sense of spaciousness.

Trinity Leeds has had an extraordinary socio-economic impact on the local area, with the city of Leeds reporting an increase in overall visitor numbers of two million.

Among its many awards, Leeds Trinity was named ‘Best Retail Estate Development in a City Centre’ at the prestigious MAPIC Awards, 2013, as well as ‘Global ICSC RECON VIVA ‘Best of the Best’ shopping centre in the world in 2015 . Trinity Leeds has helped catapult the city into 6th place on the UK’s hierarchy of top retail locations, with it being voted one of the UK's 'Coolest Brands'.

Chapman Taylor has considerable experience and expertise in designing large-scale urban regeneration projects, with successful and award-winning schemes all over the world.

Many congratulations to Landsec and everyone else involved at Trinity Leeds on reaching this milestone. We look forward to the next five years of critical and commercial success.
