'Global 100' – Set to be one of the world’s largest theme parks

What is Global 100? In short, it will be one of the world’s largest theme parks by size and one of the world’s most popular attractions by attendee numbers. We are talking comparable to the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, which is currently the world’s biggest amusement corporation based on annual visitors.

Global 100 is a mixed-use, entertainment, leisure, retail, hospitality and residential scheme which occupies a 400 hectare site. Within the site a 170 hectare theme park contains attractions influenced by international film-making from Europe, China and America.

Chapman Taylor, a world leading architect practice who specialise in large scale mixed-use projects, are delighted to have been appointed to undertake the overall masterplanning of the project.

Situated in Haikou, Hainan, China, the movie theme park involves a total investment of 38 billion yuan (US$6bn). It will be a vital component in ensuring that Hainan Island is seen as China’s principal tourist destination, for the Chinese and also international tourists.

The film-themed park is made up of 6 different villages, each theme park village represents the countries of China, the Netherlands, UK, Italy, Spain and Germany/Switzerland respectively. Chapman Taylor is developing the overall masterplan for all the villages, as well as providing the concept and architectural design for those villages representing China and the UK.

For the UK village, expect to see film characters including James Bond 007, Alice in Wonderland and Mr. Bean featuring alongside UK cultural and architectural icons such as historic castles, traditional country villages and markets.

The concept of the Chinese Village draws on the ancient Loulan kingdom or “ancient desert city” and features twin towers housing a major entertainment facility at the centre of the design. A waterfront component features a fishing village, an indoor street and the giant ship from the legendary story of “Zheng He’s Expedition”. All these elements work together to create an impression of “The Great Silk Road” journey.

Chapman Taylor are excited to part of what is “an unprecedented project that is set to rival existing globally famous attractions offered around the world” comments Chris Lanksbury, LLP Director, Chapman Taylor.

The whole project is being developed in two phases. Phase 1, consisting of the theme park, is predicted to open to the public in 2018.
