Block SM8

Chapman Taylor has played a key role in the design of SM8, the latest residential block within the landmark Smíchov City masterplan in Prague. Following the successful completion of earlier phases SM1/2 and SM3

High-quality housing

SM8 comprises 12 residential buildings and plays a key role in shaping a new residential quarter. The development integrates high-quality housing with active ground-floor uses such as shops, services, and restaurants, helping to create a lively and well-connected neighbourhood. Tree-lined streets and generous public realm spaces are also central to the design, enhancing environmental quality and supporting a comfortable microclimate.

Varied architectural styles

The architectural approach draws on Smíchov’s historic 19th-century urban structure, reinterpreting its orthogonal streets and perimeter block typology for modern living. Rather than a single large complex, the block is broken into individual buildings, each with its own identity and architectural language, creating a varied yet cohesive streetscape that reflects the character of traditional European city development.

Collaboration is a defining feature of the project, with Chapman Taylor working alongside A69, edit!, and LZ ateliér. Each studio designed separate buildings arranged in close proximity, ensuring diversity in form and façade while maintaining an overall urban coherence

A contemporary model of urban regeneration

As part of the wider Smíchov City vision, SM8 contributes to a large-scale development that will ultimately deliver homes, workplaces, public spaces, and infrastructure for thousands of residents and workers. The project exemplifies a contemporary model of urban regeneration, combining density, mixed-use programming, and high-quality design to create a sustainable and socially active city district.
