Zhangjiang Gaoke Office Park welcomes The University of Hong Kong as new education tenant
Chapman Taylor-designed Zhangjiang Gaoke Office Park in Shanghai has reached an exciting new chapter with the arrival of its first major education tenant, The University of Hong Kong (HKU), transforming the development into a pioneering education and research complex within Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park.
HKU is establishing a new presence in Shanghai’s Zhangjiang Science City, with a focus on its School of Computing and Data Science (CDS). The initiative, developed in collaboration with Shanghai authorities, will strengthen the university’s research and teaching capabilities in artificial intelligence, computer science and data science, positioning the campus at the heart of one of China’s most important innovation and R&D hubs.
Chapman Taylor won the international design competition for Zhangjiang Gaoke Office Park in 2020. Located on a 40,000 m² site in the fast-growing Zhangjiang R&D and industrial zone in Pudong, the scheme sits just 25 minutes from Pudong International Airport and under 40 minutes from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, Shanghai Railway Station and Shanghai South Railway Station.
The 161,000 m² development introduces a new generation of flexible, innovation-led R&D space, arranged across seven clusters of office buildings. The layout allows spaces to be divided or combined to meet the evolving needs of technology, research and education occupiers.
A carefully planned circulation strategy separates visitor and staff routes, pedestrians and vehicles, with autonomous vehicles, shuttle buses, taxis and logistics traffic operating on a dedicated outer ring road that never crosses pedestrian areas.
The contemporary façade design expresses the culture of the technology sector while delivering high levels of comfort through enhanced thermal insulation, shading and natural ventilation. At the heart of the park, a three-dimensional ecological landscape belt runs along the central north–south axis, providing green outdoor social spaces that support wellbeing, relaxation and creative exchange.
With HKU now taking up residence, Zhangjiang Gaoke Office Park is set to become a dynamic education, research and innovation destination, reinforcing Zhangjiang’s status as one of China’s leading science and technology clusters.
