Chapman Taylor is pleased to announce the completion of Cloud Bridge, a striking new municipal infrastructure project in the heart of Shanghai’s Jinwan Core Zone. Spanning 145 metres across the Caojiagou River at Yunqiao Road, the beam bridge provides a vital connection between the district’s high-tech R&D campuses, educational institutions, and emerging lifestyle destinations.
Measuring 20 metres in width, Cloud Bridge accommodates two lanes of vehicular traffic in each direction, along with dedicated pedestrian and non-motorised lanes. With a navigation clearance of over 3.5 metres and pedestrian walkway clearance of 2.5 metres, the bridge ensures seamless mobility across multiple modes of transport while enhancing the public realm along the riverbanks.

Rooted in deep contextual analysis, the design draws inspiration from Jiangnan’s cultural heritage, vernacular architecture and the flowing rhythm of Kunqu opera. The concept “Meandering Waters of Jiangnan, Flowing Clouds over Jinwan” reinterprets the local landscape vernacular through contemporary form, creating a sculptural yet resilient structure in raw UHPC concrete that blends quietly into its natural surroundings.
More than just a transport link, Cloud Bridge is a civic landmark. It acts as a soft seam between work and leisure, providing direct access to adjacent green belts, historic ginkgo groves, and riverside activity zones. Integrated mid-river pavilions and terraced seating support public gathering and recreation, while ramps descend to commercial frontages and heritage zones, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity.
With Cloud Bridge, Chapman Taylor has delivered not only a functional piece of infrastructure but a symbolic and experiential gateway that enhances the evolving urban identity of Jinwan and the wider Pudong district.
