Chapman Taylor unveils an ambitious vision for the urban renewal of Dongsi Wenli district in Jing'an, Shanghai, with the transformation of the Shimen 2nd Road-01 area into a dynamic new business district set to redefine the city's landscape.

Strategically positioned at the intersection of vital development axes, this project serves as a catalyst for growth, driving value enhancement across the Suzhou River Bay area. Through innovative planning and design strategies, Chapman Taylor aims to seamlessly blend tradition and modernity, fostering connectivity, vitality, and cultural richness.

At the core of the plan is the establishment of pedestrian-friendly pathways, seamlessly integrating urban green spaces with historical landmarks and contemporary architecture. From Shikumen-style boutique hotels to creative offices and art neighborhoods, the redevelopment breathes new life into the area while preserving its storied past.

The project envisions a vibrant mix of commercial spaces catering to diverse leisure and social experiences, alongside the creation of welcoming waterfront spaces such as Butterfly Bay Park. The Shimen 2nd Road - 01 Renovation Unit is slated to become a hub for finance, art, culture, and innovation, representing Shanghai's diverse cultural heritage along the Suzhou River.

With a total land area of 90.05 hectares, this development aligns with Shanghai's aspirations of becoming an international financial center. The preservation of approximately 60,000 square meters of architectural heritage underscores Chapman Taylor's commitment to ecological sustainability and cultural preservation.

Designing a new cultural and commercial destination

Through innovative planning and design strategies, our concept seamlessly blends tradition and modernity while fostering connectivity, vitality, and cultural richness. At its core, the plan prioritises the establishment of pedestrian-friendly pathways that integrate urban green spaces with historical landmarks and contemporary architecture.

The masterplan includes what is the Urban Green Valley, an innovative new multi-level street intersecting to the west with the revitalised historic buildings, and to the east with new landmark contemporary towers, which shield the project from the adjacent expressway.

Johnny Jiang recently joined Chapman Taylor’s Shanghai studio as a Director in November 2018. He has considerable experience in architectural design in both Germany and China and has led and participated in many important large-scale urban design projects, including both architectural and interior design.

Johnny has plays a leading role on some of the Shanghai studio’s most significant urban design projects, and is skilled at combining innovative concepts with the requirements of China's market and the local context. Johnny’s leadership during the construction process, and his strict control of project quality, have been widely praised by clients and partners.
