Chapman Taylor unveils interior design vision for Hulhumalé Eye & ENT hospital in the Maldives

Chapman Taylor has revealed its interior design concept for the new Eye & ENT Hospital in Hulhumalé, Maldives, creating a calming, nature-inspired healthcare environment that places patient wellbeing at the heart of the experience. The interior schematic design draws inspiration from the Maldives' national tree, the coconut palm, known locally as the 'Tree of Life' (Rūḥ), translating the island nation's natural beauty and cultural identity into a restorative clinical setting.

This specialist healthcare facility brings together ophthalmology, ENT and dental services into a patient-centred environment. The development also incorporates dedicated eye operating theatres, inpatient facilities, and a contemporary optical retail store, creating a seamless healthcare journey from consultation and treatment to vision care.

The design narrative, titled "Rūḥ: The Tree of Life", is centred around the theme "Sky Above, Sand Below, and Soul Within", reflecting the Maldivian landscape. Soft organic forms, natural materials, and a restrained colour palette combine to create an environment that promotes comfort, relaxation and healing for patients, visitors and staff alike.

Inspired by the movement of tropical breezes through coconut palms, the interiors incorporate flowing architectural lines, rounded edges, textured finishes, and warm timber detailing. Neutral tones, lush planting, and carefully considered lighting establish a welcoming atmosphere throughout the hospital, helping to reduce stress while supporting intuitive navigation and patient comfort.

The ground floor has been designed as an inviting public interface, featuring a spacious reception and waiting area alongside a contemporary optical retail store. The optical retail environment combines elegant product displays with generous circulation and integrated consultation areas, complementing the hospital's clinical services while maintaining the project's calm aesthetic. Throughout the upper floors, consultation rooms, waiting lounges, and staff areas continue the design language through the use of soft curves, tactile finishes, and natural materials.

The Eye & ENT Hospital demonstrates Chapman Taylor's commitment to creating healthcare environments that support both clinical excellence and human wellbeing. By combining contemporary healthcare planning with a design language rooted in Maldivian culture and nature, the project establishes a distinctive identity while providing patients with an environment that is both efficient and restorative.

The project further strengthens Chapman Taylor's growing healthcare portfolio across Asia. The practice has delivered a series of hospital renovation and interior design projects, including specialist clinics and public spaces at Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok, as well as the renovation of patient wards at Mahidol University's Golden Jubilee Medical Centre near Bangkok. These projects share a common design philosophy that combines operational efficiency with hospitality-inspired interiors, creating healthcare environments that reduce stress, promote wellbeing and enhance the experience of patients, visitors and healthcare professionals alike.
