Chapman Taylor completes pixel-inspired workplace interiors for Zhangjiang High-Tech Industries office building

Chapman Taylor has completed the interior design for the Zhangjiang High-Tech Industries office building in the heart of Shanghai's Zhangjiang Central District, delivering a contemporary workplace environment that reflects the district's position as one of China's leading centres for technology and innovation.

The landmark office building comprises approximately 128,000 sqm of gross floor area, with Chapman Taylor responsible for the design of nearly 12,700 sqm of interior public spaces. The completed interiors create a distinctive arrival experience while supporting collaboration, wellbeing and everyday interaction throughout the building.

At the heart of the design is a concept inspired by the language of pixels. Drawing on the visual characteristics of semiconductors and integrated circuits, the design team abstracted these forms into a series of geometric rectangles, creating a cohesive design language that runs throughout the public areas.

The signature "Pixel Mosaic" motif is expressed across the interiors, establishing a contemporary identity that reflects the building's high-tech setting. In the main lobby, the elevator hall features a striking undulating pixel-inspired façade, complemented by a reception desk that continues the same geometric language. At the north entrance, a feature wall formed from coloured gradient glass introduces a vibrant pixel composition while defining an inviting social and informal meeting space for occupants and visitors.

The completed project balances bold visual expression with functionality, using carefully selected materials, lighting and detailing to create welcoming spaces that enhance the user experience while reinforcing the building's innovative character.

Johnny Jiang, Director at Chapman Taylor Shanghai and design lead for the project, said: "From the outset, our ambition was to create interiors that reflected the technological DNA of Zhangjiang while providing a warm, engaging environment for the people who use the building every day. The pixel concept allowed us to express the precision and innovation of the semiconductor industry through a distinctive architectural language, creating spaces that are both memorable and highly functional."

He has considerable experience in architectural design in both Germany and China and has led and participated in many important large-scale urban design projects, including both architectural and interior design.

Johnny has plays a leading role on some of the Shanghai studio’s most significant urban design projects, and is skilled at combining innovative concepts with the requirements of China's market and the local context. Johnny’s leadership during the construction process, and his strict control of project quality, have been widely praised by clients and partners.
