Chapman Taylor is progressing the comprehensive refurbishment of La Gavia Shopping Centre in Madrid, reimagining the destination as a contemporary, people-focused environment that responds to the needs of a growing urban community in the southeast of the city.
The project aims to refresh the centre’s identity while reinforcing its role as a key social and commercial hub for surrounding residential neighbourhoods. Chapman Taylor has led the scheme from initial concept through to detailed design, execution and site management, ensuring a cohesive vision across all stages of delivery.
At the heart of the proposal is a reinterpretation of the traditional shopping centre model, transforming La Gavia into a more open, connected and experiential destination. The design introduces a timeless architectural language, carefully balancing volumes, spatial rhythm and material quality to create brighter, more welcoming and highly functional spaces.
Construction is currently well underway, with significant progress visible across key areas of the scheme. Delivering the works while the centre remains operational has required careful phasing and complex coordination, ensuring minimal disruption to visitors and tenants.
Sustainability is embedded throughout the project, with the use of certified materials, low water consumption planting and passive design strategies to improve environmental performance and long-term efficiency.

The intervention extends beyond the internal mall to include the side plazas and events plaza, strengthening visual continuity and enhancing the relationship between indoor and outdoor environments. A new food market will act as a vibrant social anchor, complemented by upgraded rest areas and improved services designed to elevate comfort, accessibility and overall user experience.
