Transportation: Brussels Airport Connector building opens to the public

Today the doors to the Brussels Airport Connector building opened to passengers after 2 years of construction.  Costing 75 million-euros, the Connector building is the most important investment for the airport since 2002.

The connector building links the two existing passenger terminals at Brussels Airport with a new 200 metres long terminal containing a world class commercial retail and leisure space, as well as border control and security screening.  It is expected to be used by over 20 million passengers per year.  The double-height building encourages passengers to dwell in the central departure lounge space, while the interior design ‘look and feel’ provides a seamless connection between the two existing buildings. The project was a successful collaboration between the London and the Brussels offices from conception to construction.

The British Ambassador to Belgium attended the ‘Inaugural Event’ on Tuesday together with Chapman Taylor representatives to help promote British design expertise which is illustrated in this project. This event followed the official royal opening on Monday, attended by the King of Belgium.

Keeping a commitment to lower energy consumption at Brussels Airport, the Connector uses seasonal thermal energy storage (STES) for cooling and heating.  STES covers about 70% of the energy needed to heat the building, and about 30% of energy needed for cooling it.

Congratulations to all involved.
