Baan Phraya: A contemporary restaurant inspired by Thai heritage at the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok

Chapman Taylor has created the interior design for BaanPhraya, a distinctive Thai dining destination at Mandarin Oriental Bangkok that brings together historic architecture, traditional craftsmanship and contemporary hospitality design.

Led by renowned Chef Phatchara “Pom” Pirapak, Baan Phraya celebrates the depth and character of traditional Thai cuisine in the atmospheric setting of a historic Thai house, creating an intimate dining experience that reflects both the building's heritage and the standards of one of Bangkok’s most established luxury hotels.

Building on the character of Baan Phraya

Chapman Taylor’s design approach began with the existing Baan Phraya house's architecture and character.

Rather than treating the historic building simply as a backdrop, the design uses its architecture as the foundation for the dining experience. The restoration reveals and celebrates the original house's character, while carefully considered contemporary interventions respond to the operational and experiential needs of a modern restaurant.

The result creates a sensitive dialogue between old and new, preserving the building's identity and atmosphere while introducing a refined new layer of design.

Inspiration rooted in Thai culture

The interior concept draws subtle inspiration from the Vanda orchid and the Phraya Manhai Savan texts, providing cultural references that inform the character and detailing of the spaces.

Rather than interpreting these influences literally, we translated them through proportion, pattern, texture, colour and detail. This creates an interior language that feels contemporary and sophisticated while remaining strongly connected to its Thai context.

Celebrating Thai craftsmanship

Materiality and craftsmanship play a central role in the Baan Phraya experience.

The team carefully sourced materials from Thai artisans and specialist craftspeople across the country, bringing together traditional techniques and natural textures with contemporary applications.

Bespoke furniture, fabrics, wall coverings and decorative elements were also designed and produced specifically for Baan Phraya and Mandarin Oriental Bangkok. Together, these elements give the interiors a distinctive identity while celebrating the richness and diversity of Thai craftsmanship.

Every detail contributes to the overall experience, from the tactile qualities of the materials to the relationship between furniture, lighting, fabrics and the historic fabric of the house.

An intimate dining experience

The spaces are carefully arranged to create an intimate and welcoming atmosphere, with the interior design responding closely to the proportions and character of the existing building.

Furniture, lighting, fabrics and finishes work together to create a sense of warmth and refinement, while allowing the architecture of Baan Phraya to remain at the heart of the experience.

The result is a distinctive environment where historic architecture, Thai craftsmanship and contemporary design come together seamlessly, complementing Chef Pom’s interpretation of traditional Thai cuisine.

Through careful restoration, locally sourced materials, bespoke craftsmanship and contemporary detailing, the project creates a memorable dining destination that celebrates Thai heritage while offering a distinctly modern experience.
