Almaty Museum of Arts releases documentary exploring its design and development
The Almaty Museum of Arts has released a new documentary offering an in-depth look at the rationale, design and development of one of Central Asia’s most significant cultural landmarks. Titled “Museum at the Crossroads”, the film charts the museum’s journey from an empty plot of land to the moment it opened its doors to thousands of visitors, capturing the vision, collaboration and ambition behind its creation.
Shot over a period of four years, the documentary is directed by Andrey Loshak, a documentary filmmaker, journalist and producer, who brings a thoughtful and human perspective to the story. Through interviews, on-site footage and behind-the-scenes insights, the film reveals how the project evolved from concept through to completion, highlighting the people, ideas and decisions that shaped the museum.
Designed by Chapman Taylor, and featuring Chapman Taylor Director Chris Lanksbury, the museum was conceived as more than a gallery, positioned instead as a civic and cultural platform that connects local identity with international artistic dialogue. The documentary explores how this ambition informed every stage of the project, from early concept design through to delivery, showcasing the integration of architecture, landscape and public realm.
Located at the foothills of the Tian Shan mountains, the 10,000m² building draws inspiration from the relationship between Almaty’s natural setting and its urban fabric. This is expressed through two interlocking volumes, one clad in limestone, referencing the mountains, and the other in aluminium, reflecting the city, united by a dramatic central atrium known as the ‘Art Street’.
The film also highlights the museum’s role as a new cultural hub for the region, accommodating permanent and temporary galleries, education spaces and performance areas, alongside a network of terraces and public spaces designed to encourage engagement and community interaction.
By documenting the project’s journey from concept to completion, “Museum at the Crossroads” reinforces the museum’s significance not only as an architectural achievement, but as a catalyst for cultural exchange, education and long-term social value within Kazakhstan and beyond.
