Urban regneration

A multifunctional complex integrating retail, leisure, cultural, media, and business uses, Médiacité has transformed Liège’s former Longdoz district into a vibrant new urban destination, attracting more than five million visitors each year.

A new retail and leisure offer for Liège

Developed on a 6.5-hectare brownfield site, the 160,000m² scheme, including nearly 45,313m² of GLA, is organised around a two-level shopping centre and a dedicated media cluster that houses the Pôle de Liège (RTBF studios and offices) and Média Rives, RTBF’s advanced production facilities. The retail and leisure offer comprises 124 shops, a six-screen multiplex cinema, and an ice rink, creating a lively environment that blends commerce, culture, and entertainment.

At the forefront of sustainable design

At the forefront of sustainable design and technological innovation, Médiacité was the first building in Belgium to achieve BREEAM certification, and the first shopping centre in Europe to be rated under the BREEAM Retail 2008 protocol – receiving a “Very Good” rating. The project’s environmental strategy prioritised the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, and the inclusion of extensive green roofs.

Chapman Taylor contributed to the concept masterplan for the development in collaboration with RTKL (USA), while the subsequent design and delivery were led by Ron Arad, with Jaspers-Eyers Architects and Wilco Design.
