Global ICSC members visit Trinity Leeds - ‘Best’ designed shopping centre in the world

In May this year, Trinity Leeds shopping centre in the UK, designed by Chapman Taylor, won the prestigious International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) ‘Best of the Best’ Designed Shopping Centre in the World Award, which is a huge achievement given the ICSC’s significance to the worldwide retail industry through its 70,000 members in 100 countries.

On Wednesday 14th of October, over 50 senior ICSC members from across the world gathered together at Trinity Leeds to tour the shopping centre and listen to panellists from the global ICSC VIVA Awards Jury, executives from developer and owner Land Securities, and Chapman Taylor.

Roger Wilson, Director at Chapman Taylor, spoke about the creative and commercial design rationale behind the architectural approach to Trinity Leeds. Whilst Andrew Dudley and Robert Jewell from Land Securities spoke about the development of Trinity and on-going centre management. TV presenter, journalist and street food expert Richard Johnson spoke about the unique concept behind Trinity Kitchen which consists of a vibrant mix of restaurants and "pop-up" street food vans and vendors which are regularly changed to keep the offer up to date and to provide customers with new eating experiences.

Roger Wilson commented ‘Trinity Leeds offers shoppers a new type of shopping experience that strikes the right balance between traditional retail, leisure, entertainment, and cultural activities. Its architectural influence draws extensively from the surrounding local context and, as a result, the shopping centre blends seamlessly into Leeds city centre. These commercial and design elements combine together to create a unique sense of place which is why Trinity Leeds is a worthy winner of the prestigious ICSC best of the best design award’.

The site visit was requested by ICSC members who expressed an interest in visiting Trinity Leeds due to its striking architecture, its innovative street food concept ‘Trinity Kitchen’ and its role in setting the benchmark for modern, digitally enabled, centres around the world.

The event was well received and culminated in Trinity Leeds management receiving a commemorative plaque to mark its status as best designed shopping centre in the world.
