Project profile: Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Bangkok
Chapman Taylor has undertaken a series of refined renovation and interior enhancement projects at the world-renowned Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, carefully modernising key hospitality and wellness spaces within one of Asia’s most iconic luxury hotels. Located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the Mandarin Oriental has been welcoming guests since the 19th century and is internationally recognised for its heritage, service and cultural significance.
Working across multiple phases over several years, our Bangkok design studio delivered the interior design works for the hotel’s award-winning Oriental Spa, fitness and wellness facilities, retail boutique and Ciao restaurant. The projects focused on enhancing guest experience, improving spatial functionality and introducing contemporary luxury while carefully respecting the hotel’s historic identity and longstanding reputation.
Reinventing a world-famous spa
One of the most significant interventions was the redesign and refurbishment of the Oriental Spa, a globally recognised wellness destination located across the river from the main hotel within a restored traditional Thai residence. Chapman Taylor reconfigured the spa’s layout to improve circulation and operational flow while maintaining its calm and intimate atmosphere.
The renovation included a redesigned entrance, new facial treatment rooms, an upgraded Royal Suite and refurbished treatment areas, alongside new relaxation spaces and repositioned back-of-house facilities. The design draws inspiration from the Mandarin Oriental’s colonial heritage and Thailand’s regional craftsmanship traditions, combining simplicity, elegance and subtle Thai detailing to create a restorative wellness environment.
A key aspect of the spa experience is the ritual journey across the river by private shuttle boat, transforming arrival into part of the overall wellness narrative. Chapman Taylor’s design approach reinforced this sense of transition and escape through carefully curated lighting, materiality and spatial sequencing.
Contemporary fitness and wellness interiors
Chapman Taylor also designed new interiors for the hotel’s Fitness & Wellness Centre, creating spaces dedicated to physical vitality, relaxation and holistic wellbeing. The interiors combine calm, contemporary aesthetics with highly functional training environments, allowing guests to maintain fitness routines within a luxurious and restorative setting.
The facilities include cardiovascular and strength-training areas, flexible movement spaces, yoga and meditation environments, alongside wellness amenities such as steam rooms, saunas and hydrotherapy facilities. The design emphasises openness, comfort and tranquillity, ensuring the spaces feel integrated with the broader wellness experience of the hotel rather than functioning as standalone gym facilities.
Material selection, lighting and spatial flow were carefully considered to create a sense of calm and balance throughout the guest journey, reflecting the Mandarin Oriental’s longstanding focus on personalised luxury hospitality.
Enhancing hospitality and retail experiences
Beyond wellness facilities, we also renovated the Mandarin Oriental’s retail boutique and Ciao restaurant, introducing updated hospitality experiences aligned with the hotel’s international luxury positioning.
The boutique interior features teak flooring, timber gable ceilings, brass detailing and large louvred windows, creating a refined retail environment inspired by tropical craftsmanship and the hotel’s colonial heritage. Meanwhile, the redesign of the Neapolitan-inspired Ciao restaurant introduced layered architectural elements, textured materials and enhanced spatial character to strengthen its riverside dining experience.
Chapman Taylor also acted as lead designer throughout the construction and implementation phases, ensuring consistency between design vision, operational functionality and guest experience.
Preserving heritage through contemporary luxury
The renovation works at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok demonstrate Chapman Taylor’s expertise in luxury hospitality refurbishment and heritage-sensitive interior design. Rather than radically transforming the hotel’s identity, the projects focused on carefully evolving and enhancing spaces while preserving the qualities that have made the Mandarin Oriental one of the world’s most celebrated hotels.
Through thoughtful spatial planning, refined material palettes and a strong understanding of hospitality operations, Chapman Taylor successfully integrated contemporary wellness and lifestyle expectations within a historically significant setting. The result is a series of elegant, experience-led environments that continue the Mandarin Oriental’s legacy of exceptional hospitality while responding to the evolving needs of modern luxury travellers.
