Gran Plaza 2 shopping centre is progressing well on site

The latest pictures show how vision is becoming reality at this cutting-edge renovation and extension project, near Madrid.

Located in Majadahonda, Gran Plaza 2 is popular with families, so Chapman Taylor’s designs have been created with them in mind. Soon the shopping centre will become a day-out destination with extensive new indoor and outdoor areas and leisure attractions, befitting how we like to shop and relax today.

Under construction

Chapman Taylor is both extending and reconfiguring this well-loved shopping centre. The internal structure has been altered to include a food atrium including new restaurants and a dining layout. The interiors now ‘bring the outside in,’ with the addition of an island oasis in the centre of the mall to include a water feature, water sound effects and planting. A cinema is being built, clad in real stone, ceramic tiles and aluminium composite, with a planted green ‘living wall’ and cascading waterfall. The green wall has been created in conjunction with Phares Ingeniería de Áreas Verdes. Six state-of-the-art screens will be on offer from Odeón Multicines.

Under construction

Outside, a secret garden area with decorative trees, flowers and seating, will offer an ideal vantage point to sit and watch the waterfall. What once was a car park is being transformed into a landscaped park, ‘Los jardines de gran plaza 2,’ conjuring up the atmosphere of a botanical garden with around one hundred different species of plants, including trees and bushes. Attractions for families include water jets, a pirate ship play area and climbing walls built to resemble natural rock formations. Restaurant terraces and seating areas will be available, with retractable coverage from the sun.

Design concept

Gran Plaza 2, owned by LSGIE, was opened in 2012. Its retail brands include Alcampo, Grupo Inditex, Primark, H&M, Apple, FNAC, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Mango, Scalpers, El Ganso, Cortefiel and Sfera. The majority of the renovations will be finished in mid-June with the cinema phase completing in 2023.
