Gran Plaza 2 in Majadahonda, Madrid, Spain, nominated for prestigious MAPIC Award 2023

Gran Plaza 2, a prominent shopping destination in Majadahonda, Madrid, Spain, has earned a coveted spot on the shortlist for the prestigious MAPIC Award 2023 in the category of Best Refurbishment and Redevelopment Project. This recognition highlights the exceptional transformation of this retail hub, which is a testament to innovation and excellence in the field of architecture and retail development.

The Best Refurbishment and Redevelopment project category acknowledges the most outstanding efforts in reviving and enhancing shopping centres, retail parks, outlet centres, and other retail sites. The criteria for this award are based on substantial improvements and enhancements made to existing structures, as well as their transformation for new uses, which result in a fresh and economically viable utilisation of the asset.

Our client LSGI, with support from Chapman Taylor, has both extended and reconfigured this beloved shopping centre. The project reflects a modern approach to retail, offering an engaging experience for families, with a host of new indoor and outdoor areas and leisure attractions, aligning with contemporary shopping and relaxation preferences.

The internal structure has undergone a significant transformation, featuring a food atrium that houses new restaurants and an inviting dining layout. The interiors now seamlessly blend the indoors with the outdoors, with the addition of an island oasis in the heart of the mall. This oasis includes a water feature, water sound effects, and lush greenery, fostering a serene and welcoming atmosphere.

One of the project's standout features is the construction of a cutting-edge cinema, adorned with ceramic tiles and aluminium composite materials. The cinema is set against a striking green 'living wall' and a cascading waterfall, a collaborative achievement with Phares Ingeniería Áreas Verdes. Odeón Multicines will offer six state-of-the-art screens for movie enthusiasts.

What was once a parking lot is being transformed into a landscaped park, evoking the ambiance of a botanical garden. It boasts a rich variety of plant species and trees, creating an inviting space for families. Attractions in the park include water jets, a pirate ship play area, and rock formations designed as climbing walls. Additionally, the park will feature restaurant terraces and comfortable seating areas, complete with retractable sun coverage.

The MAPIC Award nomination recognises Gran Plaza 2's remarkable evolution into a vibrant and family-friendly retail destination, setting new standards for shopping and leisure in Majadahonda. The winners will be announced at the MAPIC 2023 event in November, showcasing the industry's most remarkable achievements and innovations.
