Studio profile: Focus on our Milan studio

Chapman Taylor has been working on projects in Italy for over 25 years and has had a permanent studio in Milan since 2002. Our Milan team has a strong track record of producing award-winning, world-class built environments across several countries, with projects ranging from retail and office schemes to residential and transport developments. We take a look here at some of the studio’s currently ongoing work in Italy and beyond.

Omis Mala Luka, Omis, Croatia

The Omis Mala Luka development will be a new hospitality and residential complex, including restaurants, bars, a spa and other services, located in a beautiful seaside area near Omis, Croatia.

The buildings, located in a beautiful coastal area, are designed to follow the natural slope of the terrain and to preserve the natural environment.

The development will host a 100-key conference hotel with restaurants, a spa and function room facilities, complemented by retail and F&B areas. Three high-quality apartments buildings will be capable of hosting more than 110 guests, offerings beautiful views toward the sea. The western area of the plot hosts seven luxury private villas on two floors, with private services, a swimming pool and car parking.

The project will create a new swimming pool and a serviced relaxation area near to the sea for guests. This area will be easily accessible both from the land and the sea, thanks to the creation of a new seaside walkway and a small touristic harbour.

Zagreb East Gate Hotel, Zagreb, Croatia

Chapman Taylor is designing a new 4-Star conference hotel in the Croatian capital Zagreb, the first hotel in Croatia for Accor Hotels’ Novotel brand. Zagreb East Gate Hotel will be located in the Resnik district of eastern Zagreb, only 15 minutes from the city centre. It will welcome guests of all types but is primarily targeted at the business traveller – a market for which Zagreb requires much more capacity.

The hotel will include a multifunctional podium building and a low-rise tower building holding the hotel rooms. A central landscaped space will be carved from the podium space to provide a place for informal meetings, relaxation and rest. The biophilic interior design scheme makes use of natural materials and colours to enhance the sense of calm.

The striking façade design will be characterised by decorative horizontal lines which round off at the corners, visually “embracing” the building, creating a landmark gateway building for the eastern approach to the city.

Chapman Taylor’s Milan studio is designing the luxury hotel for client Rox d.o.o., which has partnered with Accor Hotels for this project. We are currently working with Accor Hotels’ design group to successfully implement their new design concept on site.

Wave Village, Belgrade, Serbia

The 254,000m2 Wave Village will be a new leisure and retail development near Belgrade, strategically well-located beside one of the most important highways in the country, only 30 minutes from Belgrade city centre and with a catchment area of four million people.

The new destination will host an ever-changing range of shopping, events, sport and F&B offers. The Wave Outlet will be a 28,000m2 GLA retail area with shops and F&B, planned for flexibility and dynamic rotation of the range of offers available to ensure a permanent sense of freshness. There will also be an exclusive conference hotel, positioned conveniently close to Belgrade’s Airport for business travellers and international visitors.

A 61,000m2 Surf Park includes The Indoor Lagoon, a light dome structure will host indoor slides, tubes, chutes and heated pools, a wave pool and beach, a wakeboarding pool packed with challenges and obstacles and an adventure park with rope bridges, tightropes and climbing challenges among trees and shrubs. A space called The Hub will host an e-gaming centre which will attract both casual and professional gamers.

Alongside the main building will be a large, secluded and landscaped pool area surrounded by nine bungalows in which customers can stay overnight. Each bungalow will have direct private access to the pool, its beach and the exclusive Island Bar.

Marina Resort Restaurant, Jesolo, Italy

This new, 150-cover restaurant will be the first element of the new Marina Resort in the tourist harbour town of Jesolo, near Venice, Italy. The wider scheme will host a new residential development with a pool area and services for guests.

The 570m2, two-floor restaurant will be easily accessible and visible both from land and sea. The ground floor will include a bar, reception area and marina services as well as a private area for offices and an exclusive entrance to the harbour. From the first floor, the restaurant will offer great view of the sea and private spaces to eat and relax in a sophisticated atmosphere.

The concept recalls the design of boats and the maritime atmosphere, with light colours, curtains and timber flooring.

CinecittàDue, Rome, Italy

Chapman Taylor is creating a new brand identity and completely restyling the interiors of the existing CinecittàDue Shopping Centre in Rome – the first major shopping centre in the city when it opened in 1988.

The project will create a new image which respects the character of the existing architecture while rationalising the space and enhancing its light and shape. The main entrances will be highlighted by glass portals combined with the positioning of a large new reception sign.

Internal interventions will transform the false ceiling and eliminate mirrors to make the mall brighter and wider. In the square, the centre’s focal point, we will simplify the existing architecture through the replacement of the flooring and the use of modular furniture, facilitating the numerous events that the centre offers to its users.

Vicolungo: The Style Outlets, Novara, Italy

Vicolungo: The Style Outlets offers 150 major international brands and boutiques across 34,000m² of retail and F&B space, and has a footfall of four million shoppers per year. Designed by Chapman Taylor’s Milan studio for owner NEINVER, the extensive refurbishment of the centre included the redesign of the central square, canopies, street furniture, and other innovative features.

Lighting, signage and wayfinding has been greatly improved, with much more use of digital technology, while the façade, entrance and exterior spaces have been upgraded.

The main piazza hosts a renovated information centre with a new business lounge area for meetings and events, and opposite the centre is VicoJunior – a daycare centre for children aged six and under. The piazza will also host a 1,700m2 recreational motor park, the only one of its kind in Italy.

Porte dei Laghi, Milan, Italy

Phase one of the Porte dei Laghi shopping centre project in Rescaldina, designed by Chapman Taylor’s Milan studio for Auchan, was focused on refurbishing two galleries and two plazas. The interior galleries, systems, parking as well as horizontal and vertical paths were all renovated. The design of the new spaces – the blue ‘Water Gallery’ and the green ‘Mountain Gallery’ – make it seem as if the natural colours and elements of the surrounding environment enter through the doors – this effect is a key focal point and symbol of the renewed development.

Phase two created a 25,600m² extension building containing two new malls and piazzas – the ‘Forest’ and ‘Air’ galleries. A treetop pedestrian walkway through the adjacent grove of trees on one side of the centre will bring visitors in at first floor-level to the Forest gallery.

The extension was awarded BREEAM Good status for sustainability in the ‘International Refurbishment and Fit-Out’ category – the first shopping centre in Italy to be so certified. The overall refurbishment has been designed with a key focus on reducing consumption of energy, water and other resources while protecting the surrounding environment.
