Construction begins on Honglou Square regeneration in Jinan, China

Construction has officially commenced on Honglou Square, a major mixed-use regeneration project in Jinan, China, designed by Chapman Taylor.

Located on both sides of the Quanfu River, the 360,000m² development marks a significant milestone in the transformation of the historic Honglou district. The scheme will deliver a vibrant, integrated urban quarter comprising offices, residential apartments, hotels, and a wide range of supporting amenities including restaurants, leisure, and wellness facilities.

Chapman Taylor’s competition-winning design reimagines the area as an open, all-weather destination that fosters collaboration, social interaction, and community engagement. The masterplan responds sensitively to the site’s historic context while introducing a contemporary mixed-use environment that supports innovation, culture, and everyday life.

The architectural language draws inspiration from the surrounding natural landscape of northern China, with podium forms reflecting rolling hills and towers rising like mountain peaks. This approach creates a dynamic yet harmonious skyline, maximising riverfront views while maintaining a strong connection to place.

Sustainability and wellbeing are central to the scheme, with residential components incorporating green and intelligent technologies to enhance the living experience. Once complete, Honglou Square will establish a new benchmark for future-oriented urban living and act as a catalyst for wider regeneration across the district.

Chapman Taylor won a design competition for the urban regeneration of Phase I of the Jinan Honglou Square area

The start of construction represents a key step in realising a long-term vision to revitalise Honglou’s historic character while delivering a thriving, contemporary city destination.
