Chapman Taylor’s design for a symphony, opera and ballet theatre in Hochiminh City

Chapman Taylor has created a design concept for a major landmark, inspired by the unique cultural legacy of Vietnam.

Intended to symbolise Vietnam’s huge, bustling metropolis and to appeal to visitors of the city, the concept aims to highlight the glory and pride of Vietnamese heritage through high-quality architectural design.

On five levels and including two auditoriums of 1,700 seats in total, this impressive building also incorporates a front-of-theatre public plaza to function as a cultural space for public events, sympathetic to the natural landscape of the Saigon River.

The curved lines in the landscape design create a smooth transition between the buildings and spaces, with the lush green foliage of trees in the riverside park giving the site a completely natural feel.

The main materials for the building façade are aluminium for the outer shell, with minimum eco impact, and a polycarbonate inner shell which gives a translucent effect. The inner shell can effectively block infrared heat while letting in the visible light, significantly reducing the building energy costs.

Extracting local elements and incorporating them into the architectural language, this iconic building evokes the essence of Vietnam.
