Chapman Taylor wins design competition for Jinqiao, Shanghai

Chapman Taylor is delighted to report that we have won a design competition for two retail-led development blocks in a new mixed-use development to be built at Jinqiao, in Shanghai, China.

The competition involved the design of nine building blocks, with 19 designers from 14 of the world’s best-known masterplanners and architects of mixed-use developments taking part. The competition was part of a collaborative process aimed at producing a new world-class, mixed-use district for Shanghai.

The competition winners were publicly announced at a workshop on 18 April. Chapman Taylor was awarded “Excellent Design Concept” at the meeting for our two plots.

Main Board Director Chris Lanksbury designed the two winning blocks. Chapman Taylor was the only firm awarded two blocks in the competition.

Millions of people also watched the initial Jinqiao project press conference, which included Chris Lanksbury, on Chinese national television in December, generating a great deal of interest in the subsequent competition and in the development itself. The competition success further underlines the excellent reputation that the company has in China.

The aim is to open all nine blocks of the landmark 1,000,000m² development, which will be planned collaboratively between all the winning designers, within four years.

In a statement, Chapman Taylor said that, “It is a huge achievement that we won the project competition. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to be part of the regeneration of Shangai’s Pudong area. The whole process has been enjoyable, and it has been fascinating to see all the different design proposals for the various elements of the site.”
