Chapman Taylor wins design competition for Shimao Ningbo shopping and entertainment centre in Zhejiang, China

Chapman Taylor has created a competition-winning concept design for a family-friendly retail, leisure and F&B venue in central Ningbo, in the Chinese province of Zhejiang.

The Shimao Ningbo shopping and entertainment centre will be located on a 27,700 m2 site in the city’s Yinzhou District, which sits 1 km from Ningbo East Station, 7.5 km from Ningbo’s Passenger Transport Centre and 15 km from Ningbo Lishe International Airport.

The centre will offer eight levels of retail, leisure and F&B, including F&B terraces, an internal bar “street”, F&B boxes and a cinema box at the upper floors, with the various uses clearly distinguished in the contemporary, urban-industrial façade design. A striking LED installation will act as a focal point on the building’s exterior while drawing attention from the nearby roads and residential areas.

The development’s landscaped roof and terrace spaces will be places in which to stroll, eat, drink and dwell 24-hours-a-day, while an overhanging urban balcony will provide a wonderful green space from which to enjoy views over the wider cityscape. The attractive landscaping scheme will also include a spacious urban plaza and a retail/F&B amphitheatre.

Inside, a dramatic, naturally lit atrium space will extend vertically across seven floors to the large, glazed roof, creating a dynamic space for shared activities and events with a great atmosphere. Retail, which will be a mix of luxury and high street names as well as supermarkets and independent shops, will be mostly concentrated at the lower floors, with the cinema, F&B, bowling alley and children’s entertainment situated at the upper levels.

The centre’s food hall will be open and attractive, offering a mix of traditional Chinese fare and modern dining options from around the world. There will also be dedicated spaces for art and culture as well as fairy-tale-inspired children’s entertainment areas. The scheme will be served by spacious basement car parking, which will extend across three underground levels.

Shimao Ningbo shopping and entertainment centre has been designed to attract young people and families from across the city and the wider province, providing a flexible mix of activities and offers as part of a day-out experience within a socially, commercially and environmentally sustainable environment.
