Chapman Taylor unveils masterplan concept for Yuhuan New City in China
Chapman Taylor has revealed its ambitious design concept for Yuhuan New City (Xuanmen Phase III), a transformative urban masterplan in Yuhuan, China.
Commissioned by the Yuhuan Municipal People’s Government, the concept plan covers a vast 14,500-hectare area, aiming to redefine the region as a distinctive maritime garden city that celebrates the harmony between nature and urban life.
The concept envisions Yuhuan entering a new era as the focal point of the “Huan Xianmen Bay,” rooted in local ecology and cultural heritage. Drawing on Chapman Taylor’s expertise in masterplanning and mixed-use development, the proposal integrates three core design principles: a semi-urban/rural landscape fabric, interconnected industrial and innovation spaces, and a human-centric environment that safeguards and celebrates cultural identity.
The masterplan establishes a “mountain-sea ring,” where city networks are designed to link the inland mountains with the surrounding seas. At a regional level, the plan focuses on nurturing a resilient intertidal ecosystem and creating thematic urban experiences that attract both residents and visitors. At the local scale, key features include a dynamic landscape framework, a seamless integration of water, terrain, and built form, and a layered open space system to support leisure, culture, and biodiversity.
Currently at the concept masterplan stage, Yuhuan New City is positioned to become a landmark example of sustainable coastal development in China—an ecologically rich, culturally vibrant, and beautifully livable destination where nature truly meets the sea.
