Chapman Taylor designs transformation of BeiChen Shopping Center in Beijing

Chapman Taylor has created a transformative design for the renovation of BeiChen Shopping Center in Beijing.

Located in the heart of the city’s Ya'Ao business district, this existing retail destination has the potential to become a focal point of the area’s redevelopment as it aims to establish itself as a strategically important base for national and international companies.

The renovation of BeiChen Shopping Center will see the scheme significantly upgraded to better integrate with the surrounding urban area and to become a 27,000m² community hub, with environmental and commercial sustainability at the heart of the design.

State-of-the-art offices at the upper levels will be complemented by the retail F&B and cultural amenities at ground level, helping to ensure that the area is active all day and all evening. Interiors will be modernised with a bright and uncluttered design which incorporates abundant greenery. An underground parking level will serve the development.

The extensively glazed façade will allow natural light to flood the centre, with shading fins strategically placed to control solar gains and glare. The natural ventilation strategy, which includes a rooftop greenhouse for air cleaning, is designed to change flexibly according to the quality of the outdoor air, ensuring that interior air is clean and unpolluted on days when the city is experiencing high CO2 levels.

This redesign concept, produced by Chapman Taylor’s Shanghai and Beijing studios, has been formulated to solve the site’s existing problems and to future-proof the centre to ensure that it thrives for decades to come.
