Chapman Taylor is proud to have contributed to the latest report from the Radix Big Tent Housing Commission, Rightsizing: Why Better Options Matter to Us All, reinforcing our commitment to creating homes and communities that respond to the changing needs of society. The report explores how increasing the availability of well-designed, age-appropriate housing can help address the UK's housing challenges by enabling older people to move into homes better suited to their needs, while releasing much-needed family housing back into the market.
Group Board Director Michael Swiszczowski contributed to the report as a member of the Housing Commission Leaders Group, joining a multidisciplinary panel of experts from across architecture, planning, development, housing, finance and government. The Commission brings together cross-party expertise to develop practical policy recommendations that support housing delivery, economic growth and more sustainable communities.
The report highlights that the UK is facing a growing imbalance between an ageing population and the supply of suitable later-living homes. It argues that increasing the provision of accessible, energy-efficient and well-located housing for older people would improve quality of life, reduce pressure on health and social care services, and help unlock larger family homes for younger generations. Among its recommendations are scaling up specialist housing delivery, embedding accessible design standards in all new homes, encouraging age-friendly neighbourhoods and introducing planning reforms that better support later-living development.
