Today, we are witnessing an exciting transformation in urban regeneration. The criteria that define and underpin the value of a property are evolving, with commercial uses, the true ‘urban glue’ of our cities, increasingly intertwined with energy efficiency, human wellbeing and the creation of spaces that support community life.

This means shopping centres are no longer defined solely by their commercial offer. Their ability to contribute positively to the wider city and provide welcoming, comfortable and inclusive places is becoming increasingly important as well.

Can climate change alter the way we design and understand shopping centres in cities?

Not only can it, but it must. Climate change needs to be understood in relation to place, its history, traditions, seasons and changing climatic conditions. No single solution can be applied everywhere.

For more than 60 years, we have been designing shopping centres and urban retail environments around the world, and no two are the same. Just as every place is different, societies have their own distinct and constantly evolving needs. The response to climate change must therefore be rooted in local context while remaining flexible enough to adapt over time.

Hospitals demonstrate the importance of self-sufficiency and operational continuity, maintaining high-quality internal environments even during critical situations.
