Planning permission granted for Axiom shopping and entertainment centre in West Yorkshire

Planning permission has been granted for the 54,000m² Axiom shopping and entertainment development near Castleford in West Yorkshire, as well as for the adjacent, 10,245-capacity rugby league stadium, which will be the new home for Castleford Tigers.

The permission was granted by Wakefield Council at a meeting on 14 March.

Axiom will be a superbly located development, accessible directly from the M62 via Junction 32, and only one mile from the A1 and eight miles from the M1. 2.2 million people live within a 30-minute drive, with Leeds and Doncaster under 20 minutes away. With 1km of motorway frontage, it will be a memorable landmark for the 90,000 vehicles which pass every day, and will be served by 3,000 smart parking spaces.

The centre will include 75 retail, leisure and F&B units, including leading names such as M&S, Next, Primark and Boots, complemented by the adjacent ‘Junction 32’ Designer Outlet centre and an XSCAPE leisure and entertainment area, one of only six in the UK.

The scheme is flexibly designed to allow for an ever-evolving mix of retail and leisure. State-of-the-art digital infrastructure will be used throughout the centre, including stunning LED screens and façades, the first of their type in the UK.

The stadium will form part of the 43-hectare development. As well as being a venue for Super League rugby matches, the new ground will also be available for concerts and other sporting and entertainment events. Both the stadium and the commercial centre will sit within an 11-hectare country park.

Chapman Taylor’s London and Manchester studios are acting as Lead Architect on behalf of the Lateral Property Group and Highgrove Group. It is expected that the development will create 1,100 construction jobs and, upon completion, 2,000 permanent retail jobs.
