Director Peter Mackey to speak at “Water + the City” online event on 17 March

Chapman Taylor Shanghai Director Peter Mackey will be taking part in the “Water + the City” online panel discussion, hosted by the Urban Design Group and the Landscape Institute's London Branch, on Wednesday 17 March.

As the global climate continues to heat up, the number and frequency of severe rainfall events, called “cloudbursts”, is increasing. Cities around the world are examining urban design strategies and technologies to help counter the flooding events caused by cloudbursts, which can overwhelm urban drainage systems.

Peter will be talking about Chapman Taylor’s research and work on Sponge City designs in China, which is a very effective means of naturally preventing flooding while storing water for use in dry spells. He will be joined on the panel by Louise Walker of CIRIA and Mike Cowdy of McGregor Coxall.

The event, which will be hosted via Zoom from 18:00 – 19:30, will be free to attend – tickets will be made available at the Urban Design Group website.

Our adoption and implementation of Sponge City principles on several urban designs in China was the subject of a recent Chapman Taylor Insight paper by Yichun Xu, which can be read here.
