Completed in 2008, Mira München Nordheide retail development, for client Fondara GmbH, consists of two buildings that form a new urban square surrounded by restaurants and service units.
The main building of the 70,000m² development is a three-level shopping centre with 750 parking spaces. A smaller three-level building is located along the southern edge of the new civic square and accommodates retail units, a bank, and a medical practice.
One of the largest geothermal cooling systems in Europe is installed within the building, providing almost 80% of its cooling needs. The system makes use of ground water, which is pumped through a heat exchanger, supplying the building with air at 18C. When necessary, additional cooling can be provided by conventional means. The system was being monitored over the initial three years as part of a research project.
