Spiceal Street Development Birmingham 002

Spiceal Street scheme receives planning permission

The Spiceal Street scheme at the Bullring in Birmingham, designed by Chapman Taylor, has now received full planning permission from Birmingham City Planners.  The new development will maintain Bullring’s pedigree in delivering strong architecture to the city and work is due to begin in early February for completion in October 2011.

The new 20,000sq ft development will be set around the well-known St Martin’s Square and will create somewhere in the region of 10,000sq ft of retail units for restaurants together with public realm.  The new scheme draws heavily on the areas’ history; in the early 1700s the original Spiceal Street in Birmingham, which was in the same location as the new development, was well known for its hospitality, grocery and meat trade.

The architecture for Spiceal Street will include a striking ‘ribbon concept’ curved roof, a feature green wall, formal and informal seating areas, a new water feature and floor feature lighting to emphasis the open space.  The scheme will also enhance pedestrian links from St Martin’s Walk to St Martin’s Square.

"In the Autumn of 2011, the new-look Spiceal Street will bring a new dimension to Bullring with great architecture to complement St Martin’s Church and the pioneering Selfridges building adding a buzzing restaurant atmosphere to enliven St Martin’s Square" (Spiceal Street vision quote)
