On the 25th of February 2015, nearly 200 architects, designers and interior design professionals attended a forum at the Marineda City shopping centre in A Coruña, Spain, to discuss current international trends in retail architecture and interiors.

As the leading architect practice in Spain for the design of commercially successful retail and large scale mixed-use environments, Mikel Barriola, Chapman Taylor's CEO in Madrid, presented his views on the design factors that need to be considered when creating commercially successful retail environments.

Barriola said "The design of a shopping centre must fulfill two objectives: to optimise the commercial viability of the space but also create a distinctive image for the centre.  These two objectives must be considered along side other design considerations such as: access, local regulations, passive architecture dealing with orientation, ventilation, materials, waste management, sustainability, target audience, and operators’ requirements. Once all these elements are understood then the design can begin."
