Russia: Europolis opens to the public

On October 25th, 2014, the grand opening of the Europolis shopping centre took place.  With its total area of 141,700 m², Europolis is the largest retail facility of its kind to open in St. Petersburg for the past two years. The opening ceremony has been considered one of the best in Russia with a variety of events for all ages, concerts and shows by famous bands, ending with a spectacular fireworks display.  Approximately 70,000 visitors were reported to have come for the first day of trading.

Chapman Taylor started concept design work on the project in 2010 for Fort Group, a highly successful developer based in St Petersburg. These studies ultimately progressed through the masterplanning, external envelope and mall interior design along with developing the shopping centre logo / brand, signage systems and website in a strong collaboration between the London and Moscow offices.

This delivered some 60,000 m² of GLA spread over three mall levels containing 160 stores with numerous regional and international retailers including the full suite of Inditex brands, Mediamarkt, Mango, Gant and a Prisma hypermarket.  A large array of leisure uses are also present lead by an Angry Birds activity park – Russia’s first ever family leisure park – a multiplex cinema and large food court.  This is all supported by a two level underground car park with 1,300 spaces as well as numerous metro, bus and tram links connecting the mall with the rest of the city.

Europolis is named in recognition of its location in Russia’s second city, historically seen as the gateway between Europe and Russia. From this starting point a strongly themed interior design was developed taking four key European cities – Barcelona, London, Paris and Rome – as the design focus for each of the main mall and atrium spaces. Each zone has distinctive features associated with its namesake city ranging from iconic signage to fountains and for the Rome Mall even a series of ruined classical columns in the centre of the space.

The completion of Europolis project marks a significant milestone in the development of the Chapman Taylor Moscow office. It the first large-scale commercial project for our team in Moscow and a result to be proud of. It is also a story of a successful collaboration with Chapman Taylor London Feasibility and Interior Teams.
