Director Hilary Clayton-Mitchell discusses the future of shopping malls

Chapman Taylor Director Hilary Clayton-Mitchell has written an Insight paper, entitled “The mall of the future, in which she outlines some of the key trends to look out for in coming years.

The rapid pace of change in the retail sector over the past 20 years has utterly transformed what people expect from their shopping experience. In a challenging market, with increasing competition from internet shopping, shopping centres and retail-led developments need to be able to adapt quickly, and that means that they need to anticipate developments in the sector.

As standalone shopping centres becoming an increasingly rare phenomenon, and with customers now expecting a mix of amenities, from F&B and leisure to hospitality and other uses as part of a shopping experience, old ideas about what successful retail development involves have disappeared.

Hilary’s paper outlines several emerging ideas about how to ensure that consumers still prefer to make shopping a physical day-out experience, rather than leaving retail to internet and delivery alone. She says that the future of the retail development has to be about experience, and creating a memorable all-day environment which drives word-of-mouth endorsement and repeat visits.

She also argues that the mall of the future will need to act in a way which incorporates and complements the advance of digital technology, and that each and every development will require its own unique, context-specific solutions – something which Chapman Taylor uses as a guiding principle in its approach to designing future-proofed retail projects.
